The Summer/Spring Fashion Week period has passed. Both the South African Fashion Week (SAFW) and MercedesBenz Fashion Week Cape Town (MBFWCT) hit the runways and the time has come to reflect on this seasons offerings.

I attended day two - ladies wear - and day four - menswear - of SAFW at the Hyde Park Corner (a world class mall btw,) and its safe to say that the ladies wear won my heart this season - especially the Lufthansa 1st Class Showcase. Lufthansa, partners of SAFW, opened day two with their young designer search…

AYA VELASE

Aya Velase opened the show with an extremely feminine collection, contrasting white against a very earthen tone of red.

My favourite look from her has to be this:

The reveal of the crop top is balanced by the choker collar, and the cloud shape of the crop top breaks the block of the high-waisted pants. Also note that flares are in again - evidence that the 90s are having a major comeback moment right now. What makes this look for me is the slit in the back - but you’ll come to see that open backs definitely do it for me. They add an air of chic to any outfit.

AYA GOODS

Nope you didn’t misread. Aya is a popular name. Goods was definitely the queen of prints for day two. Using shades of blue as a base element in her designs, Goods managed to arrange a bright variety of prints undeniably inspired by African design.

My winning look would be this head-to-toe blue combination.

STITCH AND STEEL

Another designer totally here for the prints was Stitch and Steel.

I had been waiting to see some Green since it is the colour of the year for 2017. Stitch and Steel served.

My favourite piece however was the vibrant orange crop top paired with the white/red/orange/lime skirt. Outside of peach, I’m not a fan of orange - so I was blown away with how well it worked.

EDDA

Before we get to the showcase winner, I must highlight my faves from EDDA, the previous year’s winner.

EDDA literally brought her sketches to life! This olive look screams military but also not military - if that even makes sense.

Pink, 2016 colour, is still here to stay - relevant since we’ve coined the term Millennial Pink.

A shoutout to this OTT hat too: My grandmother was a hat maker - they have a special place.

Best piece however is this flared skirt - the perfect way to add drama to a classy black and white.

SHIELA-MADGE

Shiela-Madge, who won the competition, turned craft into high-fashion.
