What is the most important thing about the 2017 autumn/winter fashion cycle?

There’s an array of potential answers.

What is the best thing about the 2017 autumn/winter cycle?

The fall of the skinny fit. Yes, I know it sounds blasphemous because slim-fits are very becoming, but best you believe that many, many men have been secretly yearning for the days when their pants no longer choked their ankles and it could not have arrived sooner! Now before you say anything - I absolutely adore leggings - but they’re really not comfortable when they’re made from denim.

So with open arms, we welcome back the wide-leg. International designer Jil Sanders gives us a taste with his AW17 Menswear range.

Local designers are following suit - a no brainer because our South African winter is warming up and lord knows we would appreciate the breathing space. Rising design collective Palse has captured our new favourite trend.

It’s not hard to argue that minimalism has been quite the trend and since we try to forget about the fashion catastrophe that was the early 00’s, it should be a few good years before this trend gets the boot. As a tribute to the simple beauty of being minimalist, here are my favourite minimalist pieces from Jil Sanders and Palse.

The contrast works so well, without drawing too much attention to either part of the outfit. Calming and refreshing all at the same time.

A winning factor for the minimalist movement? How cohesive it is with the wide leg trend. The wide leg is already the statement, and the minimalist trend doesn’t overload the senses with over the top colours.

A significant shift in the minimalist trend however is the head-to-toe neutrals chapter. If you look back, you’ll notice that the minimalist examples are black and white - and not to say that the classics are dead - but full-on neutrals breathe new life into the style.

Now lest we forget, 2017’s colour of the year: Greenery, as chosen by colour authority Pantone. But look at that, let’s celebrate the lasting impact pink has made in menswear:

Pink is truly the one, and has been so critical to progressing our mind sets about stereotypes and gender misrepresentation - but okay back to the topic at hand: Greenery.

Pantone made it really hard for us this time around, but creatives never disappoint and neither has Mr Sanders and his team.

Like Jil Sanders, most designers have reworked their interpretation of greenery. The original tone may look spectacular in home interiors, but the downplaying of the colour has led to this totally wearable olive - which has been a staple in womenswear for a couple of years now.

An just incase you forgot about pink, observe how well Pink and Greenery pair.

Before I bore you with the details, I think it’s necessary we run through the trends to boot this year, inspired by the gents over at Fashion Beans and GQ.

Oversized bags - Their heavy and take up space and just no

Overly ripped jeans - It looks tacky so patch it up guys

Sports shades - Athleisure is totally in, but it stops at the cycling shades. Leave those for the professionals.

So, out with the old, in with the new

Trends to look forward to:

Bold prints - I know it challenges how awesome minimalism is, but sometimes its great to pop, and the pyjama trend, especially in African prints like Chu Suwanappha’s offerings are hard to say no to.

The oversized shirt - it’s turned into a longline with hemlines dropping more and more. It’s great because that gender line gets blurrier and blurrier. Palse has achieved that magnificently. Also the raised waistline does it for the movement too.

Breathable fabrics - they make for great layering and look so whimsical in the wind

The fabric to watch out for is the technical cashmere, a Kit & Ace creation. The Athleisure trend has no intention of dying out soon, so it's only appropriate that we appropriate some of their core fabrics.

Suits in a breathable fabric - I won't complain.

Final word:

Menswear is being redefined. Dressing up in some of the more "alternative" trends takes some confidence, but pulling them off will be a stamp of achievement.

Share with us your favourite trends and what you hope is coming.
